County sales tax revenues are up

Sales tax revenue in Erie County is on the rise.

Comptroller David Shenk says revenue was up more than 4-percent in October, compared to one year ago. And for the first ten months of the year, sales tax revenue was up by nearly 9-million dollars over last year. Shenk says while revenues look promising, maintaining revenue growth is a concern.

Sales tax revenue is the single-greatest source of revenue for the county.

Teen accused in puppy burning pleads guilty

One of the two Buffalo teenagers involved with the burning of a Jack Russell terrier puppy in October pleaded guilty as charged in Erie County Court today to aggravated cruelty to animals.

Theater Community Mourns the Death of Brother Augustine Towey

The area theater community is mourning the death of Brother Augustine Towey, who founded the Niagara University Theatre shortly after arriving at the University in 1963 as a English professor.

Brother Towey, known to friends, colleagues and students simply as "Bro," built the theater group into a nationally renowned undergraduate theater program. He retired from Niagara in 2005, and died in Philadelphia yesterday after a long illness. He was 75.

Former Buffalo Broadcaster Jeff Kaye Dies

Former Buffalo radio personality Jefferson Kaye has died.

A four-time Emmy Award winning broadcast announcer, Kaye first made his mark in Boston. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Kaye was in Buffalo, as an announcer and program director at the old WKBW before moving on to WBEN.

He also hosted a folk music program for a time here on WBFO.

His work on Buffalo Bills football broadcasts led to him becoming the voice of NFL Films in 1985.

Dr. Gary A. Olson will begin his term in the new year. His latest position before Daemen was as Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Idaho State University in Pocatello.

Senecas considering outlet mall off Thruway

There may soon be an outlet mall near the Seneca Nation of Indians' Cattaraugus reservation.

The Senecas today released the results of a retail feasibility study for a mall in the Town of Hanover, with easy access to Thruway exit 58. It would lead to sales tax benefits for Chautauqua County and New York State.

The report was announced by Seneca Nation President Robert Odawi Porter, Seneca Council President Richard Nephew, and Chautauqua County Executive Greg Edwards.
