May 3, 2018

Some popular video games are being recognized for their impact on the multibillion-dollar industry.

Final Fantasy VII, John Madden Football, Spacewar! and Tomb Raider have been chosen by the World Video Game Hall of Fame as its Class of 2018.

"They battled enemy starships, avoided tackles, climbed through dark tunnels and fought off fantastical creatures to win their esteemed places," the Hall of Fame said. "The four inductees span multiple decades, countries of origin and gaming platforms, but all have significantly affected the video game industry, popular culture and society in general."

The inductees were chosen from among 12 finalists revealed in March at The Strong museum in Rochester, where the hall of fame is housed. Finalists included "Ms. Pac-Man," ''Asteroids," ''Call of Duty," ''Dance Dance Revolution," ''Half-Life," ''King's Quest," ''Metroid,"and ''Minecraft."

Electronic games of all types - arcade, console, computer, handheld and mobile - are eligible for the hall. Honorees are recognized for their popularity over time and influence on other games and pop culture.
