Amherst Issues Tickets for Sidewalk Violations

Amherst, NY – The Town of Amherst has started issuing appearance tickets to property owners who fail to clear their sidewalks.

The town is aggressively pursuing its snow clearing ordinance after three teens were killed last January. They were walking in the street because of snow-clogged sidewalks.

Town Building Inspector Thomas Ketchum said his staff has already issued a handful of citations. He says he's instructed them not to hold back.

"We want to show property owners that we're serious about enforcing this ordinance," he said. "I interested to see how our courts respond to this."

Ketchum did say more property owners seem to be complying with the sidewalk ordinance this year than in the past.
