Buffalo, NY – Buffalo will host the 2003 Empire State Games.
State officials announced Tuesday the 26th annual games will run from July 23-27 next year. More than 6,000 athletes representing six regions across the state will compete in 28 Olympic-style events. Buffalo has hosted the Empire State Games three times, the last in 1996.
The games usually attract more than 15,000 visitors from around the state, generating $8 million for the local economy. The competition will be held at various venues in Erie and Niagara Counties.
"Buffalo has a rich tradiiton as a sports town," Erie County Executive Joel Giambra said. He expressed confidence the area has the volunteers and sports facilities necessary to stage a successful competition.
