Canalside may be owned by the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation but there is a welter of agencies and governments involved in and around the Waterfront land.

The corporation hired Global Spectrum to run operations, picking it over Buffalo Place.

On Tuesday, Common Council members were offering advice to the new operators.

"We would really like to see a lot of small businesses," said Council Majority Leader Demone Smith.

Smith wants Canalside concessionaires to offer "different flavors and different tastes so we can be distinctively Buffalo."

Council members have also told Global Spectrum the city's diversity should be reflected in the bands playing Thursdays and Saturdays.

"We want it to be reflective of Buffalo. Buffalo is a very diverse community with different tastes and different looks and we want to make sure that Canalside is the same," Smith said.
