One person has died and another is in the hospital after a one-car accident in the swamps near the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge in Orleans County.
The sheriff's office says 43-year-old David Russo of Stafford lost control of his car while he was driving south on Route 63 in the town of Shelby around 11:30 Thursday morning. The car went off the road, flipped over and landed upside-down in flooded swampland.
Russo and his 40-year-old passsenger, Lisa Stanley of LeRoy, were extricated from the car and taken to Medina Memorial Hospital.
Russo was pronounced dead. Stanley was later transferred to a Rochester hospital.
Wintry weather and slippery road conditions contributed to the accident.
