Buffalo, NY – State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says the State University of New York should be charging higher tuition to students who are from out-of-state.
Right now, non-resident students pay about $8,000 more a year in tuition than those who live in New York. But Comptroller DiNapoli says his review of other states found they charge their non-resident students an average of $21,000 a year. As such, he's urging SUNY to consider raising tuition here.
DiNapoli says he doesn't think increasing out-of-state tuition would hurt SUNY's ability to compete for the best and brightest students from around the nation.
DiNapoli says SUNY could take in $340 million in additional revenue over four years if it brought out-of-state tuition more in line with other systems. He says the increase could be combined with a slight reduction in tuition for in-state students.
