A drunk driver has been sentenced to up to 10 years in prison for crashing into a group of pedestrians, seriously injuring four of them.

Authorities say Abdikadir Jaffar, 32, of Utica was visiting relatives in Buffalo last New Year's Eve. He was driving along Richmond Avenue on the city's West Side early that morning when his car went out of control, struck another car and then a utility pole, before crashing into a group of pedestrians.

The car finally came to rest after striking a parked car. Video showed Jaffar repeating the phrase "I don't care" before police arrived.

One of the injured was a 15-year-old teenager, who lost his left leg above the knee due to the crash. Another sustained a broken pelvis and two broken legs. A third pedestrian and a passenger in the car he struck sustained concussions.

Police say Jaffar registered a blood alcohol level of 0.22. He was sentenced for aggravated vehicular assault.
