Elderly Couple Dies in North Tonawanda Fire

North Tonawanda, NY – An elderly North Tonawanda couple died overnight in their home. Flames broke out inside at 286 Roncroff Drive in Niagara County around 1:30 Wednesday morning.

Assistant Fire chief Richard Kozak tells WBFO News when the arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames. Neighbors alerted fire firefighters that two people lived at the home. Kozak says both were trapped inside and died.

"Found a female victim in the bedroom. She was removed from the structure and placed in a waiting ambulance. Then we continued the search for the male victim. The fire was intense. We had a lot of heavy heat and fire conditions, which was making it hard to find the male victim. Eventually we found him on the exact opposite side of the building," said Kozak.

The couple has been identified as 88 year old Ronald Moyer and his 89 year old wife Margaret. The roof collapsed. The cause is under investigation. Kozak says he believe there was at least one smoke detector in the home.
