Erie County legislator to hold public review of India Cummings report

Jul 19, 2018

Erie County Legislature Majority Leader April Baskin will hold a special session of the Public Safety Committee on Wednesday to review, line by line, the State Commission of Correction's Medical Review Board report on the death of India Cummings.

The report says Cummings' death after being in the custody of the Erie County Holding Center for more than two weeks should be ruled a "homicide due to medical neglect."

Responding to a request from WBFO, the Commission Wednesday issued a statement, saying it "is actively monitoring the county’s progress to ensure all parties named in the report are implementing those required actions to ensure the Erie County Correctional Facility is in compliance with all applicable rules, regulations and laws.”

A rally organized by Showing Up for Racial Justice Buffalo Action will be held in front of the Holding Center in downtown Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m. This is the same group that held protests against Sheriff Tim Howard during his campaign for re-election.
