Flooding and freezing rain are threats this weekend
Western New York is bracing for wet weather this weekend that could include freezing rain and flooding.
An Ice Storm Warning will go into effect at 4 PM Saturday and last until noon on Sunday. A Flood Watch will take effect Saturday afternoon running though Sunday evening. National Weather Service Meteorologist John Hitchcock says that temperatures across the region could fall far enough that rain could change to freezing rain.
"We're going to be right at the edge of the freezing mark," Hitchcock said. "If it stays above freezing, it will be just plain rain. But there is a chance we'll dip to 31 or 32, increasing the chance for a significant amount of freezing rain."
The greatest threat for freezing rain to accumulate will come overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning. Heavy rains and ice jams could create flooding in area creeks and streams as well as in poor drainage areas. Flood Warnings will be posted late Saturday and into late Sunday for Buffalo Creek near Gardenville, Cazenovia Creek near Ebenezer, Cattaraugus Creek at Gowanda, and Cayuga Creek near Lancaster.
