A local veteran who served in World War II has been awarded the French Legion of Honor medal.

Eighty-seven year old Joseph Consiglio of Kenmore received the medal at a ceremony at Old Fort Niagara. The medal was presented by Consul Pascal Soares from the French Consulate in Buffalo to honor Consiglio's work as a medic with the 75th Division.

The soldier also earned the Bronze Star for risking his life to treat his injured comrades during battle.
