Gold medalist gets key to City
By Eileen Buckley
Buffalo, NY – Gold medalist Steve Mesler received the key to the City Wednesday afternoon.
Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown declared it "Steve Mesler Day" in Buffalo to welcome home the Olympic hero.
Mesler and his three bobsled teammates won the gold in Vancouver on February 27th. It was the first gold medal for the US in the four-man bobsled team since 1948.
Mesler appeared with his family in the lobby of City Hall. Mayor Brown gave Mesler a Buffalo pin, Buffalo snow globe and a city key.
According to the Mayor, Mesler is the first Buffaloian to win a gold medal in the Olympics in the Winter games.
Mesler grew up in Buffalo. He is a graduate of City Honors.
But WBFO News asked Mayor Brown if he will be offering a symbolic key to the City to Sabres goalie Ryan Miller. Miller brought home a silver medal from the US Men's Hockey team. There is an on-line petition and facebook push to encourage the Mayor to give Miller a key. Brown tells WBFO News it could be in the works. Listen for more on that story Thursday morning on WBFO.
