Guilty plea in robbery, beating death of East Side restaurateur

A Niagara Falls man has pleaded guilty in the robbery and beating death of an East Side Buffalo restaurant owner.

Jamell Chapman, 26, pleaded guilty in State Supreme Court Monday to a first-degree manslaughter charge in connection with the death of Upender Bawa, 79, owner of the Taste of Life Restaurant on Sycamore Street. The beating took place July 17, 2016 in an apartment above the restaurant.

Chapman faces a maximum of 25 years behind bars when sentenced on April 18.

Chapman's two accomplices are scheduled for sentencing one day later. Shanita Chapman, 31, sister of the defendant, has already pleaded guilty to first degree attempted robbery, while Dalene McIlwain, 19, has pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery.
