Gun control laws take effect this weekend

This weekend marks significant steps in the implementation of New York State's controversial SAFE Act.

Two aspects of the gun control measure will take effect. On Friday, universal background checks became mandatory for all gun purchases. Beginning Saturday, mental health professionals will be required to report any patients under their care suspected of being a danger to themselves or others should they possess a firearm.
