The NFTA should focus on its core mission of public transportation and not stand in the way of waterfront progress, says Rep. Brian Higgins.
Higgins is calling on the Authority to hand over its 384 acres of land on Buffalo's Outer Harbor to the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation for $2.
The Authority claims the deal would be illegal, but Higgins says there is precedent for one state agency to transfer land to another for next to nothing.
"The NFTA, when they acquired this property 55 years ago, acquired it in two separate transactions for a dollar each," Higgins said Monday morning.
Higgins says the evidence of the Harbor Corporation's effectiveness at Canalside is very clear. He points out that four years ago, the Inner Harbor had no visitors. This past summer the area attracted more than a half-million people.
