Lawmaker wants ECC to expand city campus
North District Common Council Member Joe Golombek wants to use a portion of the city's share of casino revenue to try and entice Erie Community College to expand its downtown campus.
Golombek is asking lawmakers to consider using some of the $15-million the city received from the Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino to help fund a new academic building. ECC currently plans to build the complex at its Amherst campus. Golombek hopes college officials will reconsider.
"What I would like to propose...is that not only does the council and the city desire and support the health building coming to downtown Buffalo, but that we should be involved in using some of that money towards enticing Erie Community College to build their building in downtown Buffalo," Golombek said.
ECC announced earlier this year that it would build a $30-million Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathmatics complex on the North Campus. It says the decision is based on several factors, including the availability of land and parking...and the fact that North has the highest student enrollment.
An ECC spokesman says the college plans to move forward with the project as is.
