Legislature fails to address bullying issue
Despite much discussion in Albany about dealing with bullying and cyber-bullying, there is still no bill going to the governor.
There is growing public concern about bullying, especially using social media on computers. Locally, the case which made it most obvious was the suicide last September of Williamsville North High School freshman Jamey Rodemeyer.
That is in the district of Senator Mike Ranzenhofer, who has a bill making cyber-bullying a misdemeanor crime. Ranzenhofer says it's time to push back.
"With the advent of electronic devices with iPads and iPhones and texting and all of the stuff that takes place, the technology has advanced to where the criminal laws and the public health laws and the education law is really in the dark ages," Ranzehofer said.
The Republican senator says he isn't seeing much action in the Assembly on the issue.
