One person is dead and three others are hospitalized following a multi-vehicle crash on Delaware Avenue at Great Arrow Friday morning. One of those vehicles crashed into an apartment building, displacing more than two-dozen residents.
The incident took place around 8:20 a.m. Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield initially said that based on initial findings, the crash occurred following a two-car chase that resulted from a domestic dispute. But he says since retracted those comments.
The driver of one of those cars, a 51-year-old Buffalo man, was declared dead at the scene. Whitfield had said the man rammed into the other vehicle, which had two occupants who were believed to be members of his family. That assertion is also now in dispute.
The two individuals in the second car were taken to ECMC with non life-threatening injuries. The deceased driver also struck another vehicle in the sequence of events.
The apartment building suffered significant damage. One of its residents was also hospitalized. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. An autopsy will be scheduled to determine the man's cause of death.
A stretch of Delaware Avenue in the area had been closed for much of the day, but reopened around 4 p.m.
