There's more senior housing coming to Buffalo's East Side as True Bethel Baptist continues its building activities.
The East Ferry Street church is gradually surrounding itself with a community as the congregation's Community Development Corporation continues its construction program.
There was plenty of land as the neighborhood deteriorated over the years. An old lead smelter across the street was cleaned up with millions of public dollars and replaced with housing.
Now, Pastor Darius Pridgen and Ellicott District Common Council member said it's time for housing for seniors and a Dollar General store.
"We did new build single family owner-occupied houses, then the family units across the street and now the senior units. We wanted to make sure there was a community being built there, not just houses."
Councilmember Pridgen said the last pieces are about to fall into place to allow construction to start in the middle of January. He said the $8 million, three-floor complex will hold 45 seniors with climate-controlled apartments. Construction should take about 18 months.
