A 19-year-old man is in critical condition at Erie County Medical Center after being struck by the SUV of an off-duty Buffalo Police detective on her way to work.

Buffalo Police Capt. Jeff Rinaldo says it happened about 5:45 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Main and Custer streets in the city's University District. Rinaldo says the department's Accident Investigation Team is on scene, the detective is cooperating with investigators and has "volunteered for a blood draw," which is being conducted.

He says she is a "nearly 40-year veteran of the force, well respected and very shaken up."

Police will be looking for city surveillance, as well as video from area businesses, to help determine how the crash happened. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call Buffalo Police at 851-4444.
