Quiz helps consumers become more shopping-savvy

As many consumers scramble to cash in on holiday deals during the busiest period of the shopping season, advocates are urging them to their homework and be on the lookout for deceptive advertising practices.

The Better Business Bureau has even devised a quiz to better prepare online shoppers for some hurdles they might face.

“The risks that they’re taking really comes down to the prices that they’re paying and falling for. Deals that are too good to be true," said Peggy Penders, public relations director for the Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York. "Both of those could be avoided if they’re doing their research in advance." 

Penders said even the most experienced shoppers can be fooled during the hectic holiday shopping season. She also urged people who plan on purchasing gifts on the internet to use extra caution.

“Make sure they are protecting their credit card information, that they are actually using a credit card giving them the best protection in case something should go wrong with their purchase," said Penders.

The Better Business Bureau devised the  quiz to help online consumers.

"It’s a little quiz, it’s really fun and quick and it will help you better understand some of the things you should be doing on a regular basis when you’re in an online environment," Penders said.

She added that the quiz will also help buyers become more aware of deceptive advertising ploys.

The Better Business Bureau also offers online resources to help consumers recognize deceptive advertising practices.
