The Buffalo Sabres announced Thursday that they will host a game between the Erie Otters and the Niagara IceDogs at First Niagara Center this fall. The Ontario Hockey League game will showcase the talent of the world’s top junior prospect, Connor McDavid.
Connor McDavid is 6-feet tall and 185-pounds. The 17-year old is being called the “next great one” and is expected to be the #1 overall pick in next year’s draft.
In his second season with the Otters, the center had 28 goals and 71 assists in 56 games. McDavid was asked where he imagines he’ll end up in the NHL, he says he’s trying not to think about it right now.
“Right now it’s just all about getting back with the Erie Otters and having a good training camp, preseason, and a good start to the year. That’s what it’s all about. You just got to worry about yourself. Maybe when we get a little closer to the draft then you can start picturing, which organization you’ll play with, but right now all it’s about is focusing on having a good year,” said McDavid.
The Otters will play the Niagara IceDogs on October 22nd in Buffalo. Otters General Manager Sherry Bassin says OHL games are a way to see the stars of tomorrow, today.
“It think it’s a special opportunity for your hockey crazy fans. And Niagara’s got some very special players. So, it’s a real specific, special opportunity. It’s in coordination with this new center and we’re proud to be part of it. We’re proud to bring OHL here,” said Bassin.
Former Buffalo Sabres Defenseman and Otters Assistant Coach Jay McKee says it’s surreal to be coaching in the same arena where he played for 10 years.
“To be out there coaching in front of however many in a place that I call home, Buffalo has been home to me for 18 years, half my life now, it’s going to be a pretty neat feeling,” said McKee.
Tickets for the Erie Otters game at FNC are $15 each for any seat in the house. Buffalo Sabres season ticket holders can get tickets for $10 at the First Niagara Center box office or online at Tickets.com.
