Scientist Steps Forward to Defend Art Professor

Buffalo, NY – SUNY at Buffalo Art Professor Steven Kurtz heads back to federal court Monday for more pre-trial arguments in the case the government initially called bio-terrorism. When the case goes to trial, Kurtz might get some expert help.

A scientific expert on bacteria has offered to witness on behalf of Kurtz at his trial, and on behalf of Pittsburgh researcher Robert Ferrell at his sentencing in February.

Patrick S. Moore, MD, MPH is the director of the Molecular Virology Program at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Center. Moore recently sent a letter to prosecutors condemning the government's continued use of incorrect references to "dangerous bacteria" in the mail fraud case against Kurtz and Ferrell.

WBFO's Joyce Kryszak talked with Moore about the validity of the government's claims - and what Moore calls the chilling effects on the scientific community.
