The seventh National Take Back Initiative takes place today at various locations across the region.
It's a chance for residents to get rid of unused, unwanted, or expired prescription drugs anonymously, with no questions asked.
Over 27 tons of unwanted drugs were collected in the six previous Take Back days since September 2010 in Western New York, as part of over 14 hundred tons turned in nationally.
Expired and unused medications can cause public health and safety concerns due to the potential for misuse or abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs come from family and friends, including unused and expired prescriptions in a medicine cabinet.
There are dozens of collection sites throughout Western New York that will be operating from 10AM until 2PM.
