New York Democrats are playing key roles in the Democratic National Convention, with Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown the chair of Hillary Clinton's home state party and Gov. Andrew Cuomo scheduled to speak Tuesday. Buffalo News Political Reporter Bob McCarthy spoke from Philadelphia with WBFO's Howard Riedel on the latest in the closely-watched convention.


With its prime location on the convention floor, the New York delegation appeared to enjoy the spotlight during this week's Republican Convention in Cleveland. State Police arrested a man in Rochester Sunday evening, charged with the sale of 150 packets of K2. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the state is getting tougher on the potent "synthetic marijuana," as it will most likely begin to spread across Western and Upstate New York.

More New Yorkers are now eligible for nutritional benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), what used to be called food stamps.

One of the centerpieces of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s economic development plans has created just a small number of jobs so far, but the governor is urging patience.

Governor Cuomo has introduced new emergency regulations he says will improve the safety and accountability of child day care programs in New York State. Some Homeless advocates are dismayed by what they say is Governor Cuomo’s  failure at the end of the legislative session to follow through with promises to fund five years worth of new supportive housing and other services for the homeless. Gov. Andrew Cuomo stopped in Buffalo on Wednesday to sign new legislation to fight the opioid crisis. 


Business leaders, particularly those in upstate New York, say the recently concluded 2016 legislative session was the worst for small businesses in quite some time.

What began in January as an ambitious reform package to address a wave of corruption at the Capitol, proposed by Governor Cuomo, dwindled to just two proposals by the time the session closed in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday morning. 


New York State Department of Financial Services

The New York State Senate Wednesday confirmed Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s nominee to regulate the state's more than 1,500 insurance companies and nearly 1,600 banking and other financial institutions. Maria Vullo has served as Acting Superintendent of the Department of Financial Services since February, when she was nominated by Cuomo to lead the agency he created in 2011 in response to the banking crisis.

Hoosick Falls residents came to the Capitol on Wednesday to demand hearings on the water crisis that has revealed high levels of a toxic chemical in many people’s blood streams.

The news from Albany of an opioid abuse legislation agreement is being hailed in Western New York by many who are on the front lines in the fight against opioid addiction. If there are any disappointments to local advocates, it's that agreement on the measures within the package didn't happen years ago.
