It is proving to be a busy year for the Buffalo-Niagara film industry. Three major productions are currently shooting scenes in the area and a highly anticipated movie filmed at several local sites will be released next month.

The site of a former hospital for the mentally ill will soon be reborn as a hotel and architecture musem and education center. Officials at the Richardson Olmsted Complex marked the completion Tuesday of a busy three-year stage of reconstruction.

Buffalonians often talk about famous architects like H.H. Richardson, Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright who came to town, executed a commission or three, then left. They say little about such accomplished home-grown architects as Richard A. Waite, who designed the Ontario provincial parliament building in Toronto; James A. Johnson and E.B. Green, who designed many of Buffalo’s civic landmarks; or John Wade, designer of Buffalo’s greatest building, City Hall.


City students get hands-on lessons in architecture

Models of city neighborhoods created by Buffalo public school students are currently on display at the CEPA Gallery. Students made the structures as part of an Architecture & Education Program.

A geodesic houseboat called "The Pride of Buffalo" is being displayed at harbors around western New York for the next few weeks. Its builder, Michael Weekes, hopes to inspire others to build their own boats.

A western New York business is creating terra cotta architectural features with the help of the latest technology. The objects are an important element in restoring and maintaining historic buildings and building new ones.

A bill has passed in the Senate that aims to increase the number green homes built in New York State. The bill would give municipalities the power to grant a tax exemption to have a green home built in their locale.

A western New York development company unveiled its plans to build a new innovative office space in downtown Buffalo when completed the structure is expected to compare to Google and Yahoo’s office buildings.

Several local sites designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright can now be seen on one day-long tour. 

The Darwin Martin House, Graycliff Estate, the Blue Sky Mausoleum and the Fontana Boat House are among the stops on the All Wright All Day tour announced today by Martin House Restoration Corporation Executive Director Mary Roberts.

"This will be one of the most fun-filled architectural educational tours that you can take," Roberts said.
