The Diocese of Buffalo has announced the appointment of Steven Halter as its new director of professional responsibillity. Halter's duties will include investigating complaints of clergy or employee sexual abuse and misconduct.

Every year many judges, attorneys and public officials gather for the Red Mass of the St. Thomas More Guild—a celebration to bless the legal community. This year was a little different. Protesters lined up outside of St. Joseph Cathedral late Tuesday morning asking those who entered to call for Buffalo Bishop Richard Malone’s resignation.

The Catholic Church now formally considers the death penalty "inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person" and is pledging to work for its abolition worldwide.

It's a shift for the church, which used to consider the death penalty a "means of safeguarding the common good" in response to "certain crimes." The update to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the book of official teachings of the church, was announced Thursday.

Buffalo Police announced Thursday they have charged an 18-year-old man with multiple counts, including a hate crime, in the late Tuesday destruction of a Blessed Mother statue on the grounds of St. John Kanty Catholic Church.

A Catholic church on Buffalo's East Side was struck by a vandal late Tuesday, who removed a statue of the Virgin Mary from a garden, severely damaged it and left behind a note warning that "this building will be destroyed." The suspect is known to the neighborhood and witnesses suggested to WBFO that mental health may be a factor in the incident.

A local man is going public with claims of being sexually abused as a teenager by a Catholic priest employed by the Diocese of Buffalo.

New York’s Catholic Cardinal Timothy Dolan met privately with Gov. Andrew Cuomo Tuesday over a proposed bill to give victims of childhood sexual abuse more access to the courts. The Cardinal remains opposed to a key provision of the measure.
