As more and more efforts are made across the country to curtail opioid addiction, some say a culture of fear has developed in the medical community -- fear for patients' safety, fear of being prosecuted by regulators. One fallout is a growing population of patients no one seems to know exactly what to do with: chronic pain patients who are already dependent on opioids and need to find new doctors to treat them.

A fifth generation Buffalonian with strong community ties and long-time involvement in the region’s healthcare arena will become president and CEO of Catholic Health early next month.

The U.S. Justice Department on Friday announced that Buffalo-based Catholic Health System has agreed to pay $6 million dollars to settle a complaint alleging it billed federal health care programs for unnecessary services over a seven-year period.

Mount St. Mary's to join Catholic Health system

Mount St. Mary’s Hospital and Health Center in Lewiston is formally joining the Catholic Health system. The organizations have been affiliated for years through the Acension Health system, but now they’re making it official.

Catholic Health, the area's second-largest health care provider, has announced plans to build a new six-story administration building along the Elm-Oak Arterial downtown.

Groundbreaking for the $46 million headquarters and training facility is scheduled for October 30, with completion projected for the summer of 2014. The new building will be at 144 Genesee Street, between Elm and Oak Streets, just south of the Kensington Expressway terminus.
