As the morning sun rose over the cities of Central Mexico on Wednesday, where city blocks had lain neatly arranged, there was now a mess of rubble and stunned residents, watching as thousands of earthquake volunteers and rescue workers dug through scattered stones searching for signs of life.

The 7.1 magnitude quake struck Tuesday in Puebla state, some 75 miles from Mexico City, but it devastated a vast expanse of the country. Mexican authorities put the death toll at 230.

As Nepal continues to be dug out from the aftermath of an earthquake, some of its natives are gathering in Buffalo to help combat the devastation.

A very light earthquake was felt by some residents living in Niagara County during the midnight hour Friday.

The Niagara County Sheriff's Office says it received several calls during from people reporting a loud boom or feeling a shake. 

The U.S. Geological Survey reports that a 2.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Lake Ontario at 12:25 a.m., about four miles northeast of Olcott.
