Cafeteria Chats and Student Journals are part of American Graduate – Let’s Make It Happen – a public media initiative to address the drop out crisis, with support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to help local communities keep more students on the path to graduation.

Buffalo, NY – The University at Buffalo Alumni Association will honor 20 individuals with achievement awards at a gala to be held Friday in the Adam's Mark Hotel, 120 Church St.

Buffalo, NY – UB's Center for Computational Research hopes to grow its own future scientists by taking its sophisticated bioinformatics into area high schools.

"This is a DNA to protein sequence," said Jaclyn Shaw. "Here what we do is use Purl, which is our coding sequence, and what you do is type in a certain series of DNA. You can make up anything out of the four nitrogenous bases and then it prints out the actual amino acids that would be produced. That's what we've been working on."

Buffalo, NY – Over 800 people were in attendance Thursday night for a forum on public education in Western New York. Called Buffalo Conversation II, the discussion at Buffalo State College focused on ways to improve the education experience for area students.

Several speakers said that parents should be more involved in their children's education, and that financially challenged districts such as Buffalo's need more resources.

Buffalo, NY – Hundreds of students from the University at Buffalo and Buffalo State will begin a march to Albany Tuesday to protest a proposed $1,200 tuition increase.

They're calling it the "No Tuition Hike." The relay march across New York will involve students from all SUNY campuses across the state, culminating March 11th in Albany. Organizer Michael Davoli of the New York Public Interest Research Group says local students will be marching 24 miles today.

Buffalo, NY – Last week the director of the FBI warned that universities could be a target for small scale terrorist attacks. While no specific threat has been directed at UB, university officials are making sure they're ready. That includes heightened security, updating emergency plans, and providing information for the people who come to campus.

Chautauqua Institution, NY – It's an all too familiar story. A $200 million deficit, contentious union-administration relationships and 90 percent of graduating seniors failing their proficiency exams. The Cleveland school system had been in long-term disarray when its new CEO arrived in 1998.

The head of Cleveland schools, Barbara Byrd-Bennett, will be speaking next Thursday at the Chautauqua Institution as part of the theme -- "A Passion for Learning."
