Debate over New York State's economic development policies, and their impact on Western New York, has spread beyond an exchange between a local state lawmaker and the head of a key development agency.  A statewide government watchdog agency and the Lieutenant Governor have also offered differing points of view.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced this week that a new $50 million exposition center will be built at the New York State Fairgrounds near Syracuse - and work will happen quickly.

New York State is investing in a Buffalo school to prepare students for future manufacturing careers.  Empire State Development is providing a $3.2 million from the Buffalo Billion initiative to Burgard High School's Advanced Manufacturing program. WBFO's senior reporter Eileen Buckley says even though students are on summer break, they were at the school to demonstrate the program.

Democrat Erin Cole does not consider herself a political person, but has been on a career track to run for political office for quite some time. The 46-year-old said the timing is now right for a run, and she intends to take on Clarence Republican Chris Collins.

With their own multi-million dollar investment and some help from New York State, nationally-known dairy producer HP Hood is taking over a former yogurt production plant in Batavia and will reopen it for their own milk production needs. At least 200 jobs are expected to be created.

The scandal over Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s economic development programs has led to more scrutiny of whether the projects are the best way to improve the state’s economy, and some watchdog groups are asking questions.

During a recent visit to Buffalo, Governor Cuomo sparred with reporters over his economic development programs and their lackluster performance in creating jobs. On WBFO's Press Pass, Jim Fink of Business First suggested that lofty job goals were not going to happen overnight.

Following a holiday season shutdown, work is re-starting on the Gateway project at the Peace Bridge.
