Erie County Fair officials are hailing a successful finish to the "best 12 days of summer." Festivities wrapped up in Hamburg on Sunday, but for the first time in several years the overall attendance is less than one million people. The reason? For some, it was just too darn hot this year.

Today marks the opening of the 175th annual Erie County Fair in Hamburg.

Special events planned for the 175th Erie County Fair in August include a high-wire act by daredevil Nik Wallenda and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra's first solo concert at the fair in nearly 60 years.

The Erie County Fair opens today at the Hamburg Fairgrounds. The fair is the third largest county fair in the United States and often draws up to one million people. But with increased concerns of domestic terrorism in the wake of this past spring's Boston bombings, WBFO's Eileen Buckley says security will be taken up a notch this year.


Given the popularity of animal exhibits and petting zoos at county fairs, health officials are reminding the public about the importance of practicing good hygiene. This after an outbreak of swine flu in about a dozen states. 

So far, the outbreak has been limited to mid-western states.  But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention calls the 162 cases reported as of Friday an extraordinary increase over the 13 swine flu cases confirmed during all of 2011.
