Erie County is competing in one of the great corporate gold rushes: the fight to grab Amazon's new $5 billion corporate home and potentially 50,000 jobs averaging $100,000 a person.

Although upstate regions continue to struggle, New York State had more jobs last year than at any time since the Great Recession, according to a new report on employment published Monday by New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

There were 800 people registered for the Panasonic job fare Wednesday evening at the Buffalo Employment and Training Center - and more than that came to fill out forms and present resumes - as the company plans 150 hires by the end of August.

The growth of the film industry in Western New York is having a positive effect on jobs. As the number of films produced here increases, so, too, does the number of local people needed to work on their crews. Several area colleges, as well as the regional film commission itself, are now offering courses for entry-level positions on film crews.
