The students in the Lancaster School District have spoken. The selected the name Lancaster Legends to replace the former and controversial Redskins name.

The Lancaster School District has a list of seven finalists as it continues to decide on a new mascot name to replace the controversial use of the "Redskins" name.

Even a meeting over the school budget turned into a battleground last night for the continuing fight over Lancaster schools use of Redskins as the sports team nickname.

The Lancaster School board had no intention to make a decision on the future of the district nickname of Redskins until the lacrosse team was hit with refusals to play from three other school districts with large Native American student populations. The board voted unanimously Monday night to drop the nickname immediately.

While some members of the Lancaster School community want to keep the name “Redskin” for district sports teams, the Seneca Nation is weighing in against it.

A banner was raised over Central Avenue in the village of Lancaster that supports keeping the school district sports name Redskins. The Lancaster School District is considering changing team nickname and mascot. WBFO's Focus on Education reporter Eileen Buckley says many find the the nickname to be offensive to Native Americans.
