The National Park Service has announced a proposal to more than double the peak-season entrance fees at the country's busiest national parks, including Shenandoah, Yosemite, Yellowstone and Grand Canyon.

The park service said Tuesday that it needs the revenue expected from the fees to address its nearly $12 billion backlog of deferred maintenance. But the announcement has been met with worries that higher prices will push the parks out of reach for many Americans.

New York State is working through its Parks 2020 plan, a $900 million shopping list of renovations and improvements for the state's vast network of parks. Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey says it is working and why parks attendance has risen from 57 million to 69 million this year.

Upgrades are on the way for 22 parks across the City of Buffalo. Mayor Byron Brown says the city is spending an additional $4 million this year in improving parks and playgrounds.

New Yorkers resolved to having a healthier new year could get a step ahead Wednesday with a special hiking program at some of the region's state parks. Guided First Day Hikes are planned at 23 state parks and historic sites, including Letchworth, Allegany and Fort Niagara.

Playgrounds are for everyone

Recent changes to federal laws now mean that playgrounds must have wheelchair accessible surfaces and equipment suitable for people living with disabilities. The changes affect all parks built or modified after March 2012. The foot traffic into one western New York town has tripled since their all inclusive playground opened this past May.
