Kennedy says state will help with blizzard aftermath

New York State has declared a State of Emergency for all of Western New York and parts of northern Central New York. The action comes after the National Weather Service officially declared a Blizzard Warning in Erie, Genesee, Wyoming, Allegany, Cattaraugus, Cayuga, Chautauqua, Monroe, Livingston, Niagara, Ontario, Orleans, Oswego and Wayne counties.

The minimum wage increase of $8 an hour went into effect in New York State Tuesday. The increase is the first of three raises that will result in minimum wage workers earning $9 an hour by the end of 2015.

In events across New York, state lawmakers joined community activists and labor leaders Tuesday in calling for passage of campaign finance reform in Albany. 

State Senator Tim Kennedy's margin is rising slowly as absentee, affidavit, and military ballots are counted in the very tight race.

The race for the Senate seat spreading across Cheektowaga, Lackawanna and Buffalo has been tight since the ballot count began on September 13.

With a voter turnout far above the usual for a primary election, Kennedy came out of the unofficial voting machine count 271 votes ahead of County Legislature Chair Betty Jean Grant.

The official count put him 91 votes ahead.
