Architect of waterfront's rebirth retiring

The man who has led the redevelopment of Buffalo's waterfront is calling it a career. The Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation has announced its president, Tom Dee, will retire June 29.

More construction and planning are coming to Buffalo's Outer Harbor, as decisions continue on what to do with the vast swath of land along Lake Erie.

Plans are in the works that will change the look of Canalside. The Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation has approved what it's calling the "Interpretative Structures Project."

The Caledonia bagpipers were on the Central Wharf Monday for the official reception to the harbor for LCS-9, with the name "Little Rock" just barely visible on the stern. The U.S. Navy's newest ship is finally docked at Canalside, readying for a first-of-its-type commissioning, next to its much larger predecessor.

Officials at Canalside are hoping the weather cooperates as the popular waterfront destination prepares to host a grand opening of its winter activity season on Saturday.

The "Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper" model that has proven successful in growing Canalside has been adopted for Buffalo's Outer Harbor. But the plan approved by the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation is raising concerns.

New and expanded offerings and lots of dry hot weather led to a very busy summer on Buffalo's waterfront. Canalside saw a 50% increase in visitors.

Following the nationwide trend at stadiums and other large venues, Canalside is ramping up security for concerts and other major events. Some of the changes will be in place for Thursday night's show.

Several improvements to Canalside have been completed ahead of the 2016 summer season. Officials cut the ribbon on a $2.2 million expansion of the Central Wharf on Friday.

A new recreational area will soon be open to the public on Buffalo's Outer Harbor on land that has been closed off for decades.

Local elected leaders officially kicked off the project along Furhmann Boulevard adjacent to the Times Beach Nature Preserve Thursday morning.
