Fifteen puppies and dogs found abandoned in the middle of a rural road are settling in at the Wyoming County Animal Shelter. Authorities are still looking for those responsible for leaving the canines where they were nearly hit by a car Sunday evening.

Fire destroys historic Wyoming County building

A state of emergency has been declared in the Wyoming County town and village of Castile following a massive overnight fire that destroyed a government building. 

Two dozen fire companies were called to 55 North Main Street around 2 a.m.  The 130-year-old building, which is a total loss, housed town and village offices, a restaurant, and apartments. 

Some residents tell media outlets that the owner of the restaurant, Lorraine's Place, who lives above the restaurant, is unaccounted for.  Authorities have not confirmed her status.

Charges against four Attica prison guards have been dismissed by a Wyoming County judge.

Sergeant Sean Warner along with Officers Erik Hibsch, Keith Swack and Matthew Raddemacher faced multiple charges in connection with an alleged assault on an inmate. The judges decision was based upon issues with testimony provided to the grand jury by the medical examiner.

The case could be brought before another grand jury in the future.
 

Five people, some in their teens, have been arrested in connection with a string of robberies.

Wyoming County sheriff's deputies have broken a criminal ring that targeted Mexican migrant workers in the towns of Pike, Sheldon and Castile. The victims were lured away from their workplaces with promises of alcohol. Once the victims were intoxicated, they were beaten and robbed. The arrests included both males and females with ages ranging from 19 to 24.

Authorities claim that the investigation continues and more arrests are possible.

A Wyoming County police officer shot and killed his son Saturday morning in a case of mistaken identity.

Fifty-nine year old Michael Leach fired his gun when a man he thought was an intruder entered his hotel room in the early morning hours. The victim was discovered to be 37 year old Matthew Leach, the officer's son. The elder Leach was taken to a Utica hospital for treatment of a medical condition.

An investigation into the case is continuing, though it appears that the shooting of the relative was an accident.
