100 Congolese refugees in Buffalo seeking asylum

Jun 18, 2019

Buffalo's latest group of immigrants as arrived. One-hundred refugees from Democratic Republic of the Congo are here to seek asylum in the United States.

Their path to Buffalo took them from Africa to Brazil through Central America and across the U.S. southern border.

Anna Ireland Mongo, chief program officer at Jericho Road Community Health Center and their VIVE Buffalo shelter for refugees and asylum seekers, said the group ended up in Buffalo because of its reputation as one of the few cities that will accept and shelter refugees. It is not clear whether they will stay longterm, as the shelter is near capacity.

However, due to the influx of new residents, VIVE is in urgent needs of donations. WBFO's Howard Riedel talked more with Mongo about what is next for the new Buffalonians.
