A directive issued be the federal government on transgender student rights is being welcomed by the region's largest school district.
Will Keresztes, chief of intergovernmental affairs, planning, and community engagement in the Buffalo district, says the directive, which protect students' gender identity decisions, is "an important and long-awaited moment in public education." It reminds districts that they are obligated to treat transgender students in a way that matches their gender identity, including access to bathrooms and locker rooms.
Keresztes says the district has already begun implementing the directive's key measures and is developing its own policy to enhance protections and support for students.
The departments of Education and Justice released the directive Friday.
