The New York State Department of Transportation is hiring as the agency prepares for the arrival of winter weather. The department is looking for about 500 permanent and temporary maintenance workers not afraid snow.
The work includes operating snowplows, backhoes, end loaders and other heavy equipment. They will help with snow and ice removal, but also perform general highway repairs and maintenance.
Spokesman Jordan Guerrein said these are important jobs.
"Often they're thankless jobs, but they play an important and vital role here to our local economy in the wintertime in terms of keeping the roads safe and accessible, and also, just ensuring the safety of the traveling public," he said. "That's our No. 1 priority, our No. 1 mission at DOT."
Guerrein said this is a great opportunity for people if they have a commercial driver's license and are looking for a job that pays well and has good benefits, whether it's seasonal or something long-term.
Those hired will be trained and evaluated on several pieces of equipment.
Nearly 4,000 full-time snow and ice operators are responsible for some 36,000 miles of roadway statewide.
"The maintenance workers are the heart and soul of a lot that we do here at DOT, certainly in the summertime, and in the wintertime when we put the plows on our trucks," Guerrein said.
