Dozens of cats found in filthy Somerset home

Jul 24, 2012

The Niagara County SPCA is investigating an apparent animal hoarding case in the town of Somerset.

Between 50 and 100 cats have been found living in a dilapidated home at 8681 Lake Road, where conditions are being described as "deplorable."

Many of the cats are suffering from upper respiratory syndrome and flea-induced anemia. Feces piles are described as being two to three foot high in some rooms. The SPCA officer on duty says it appears that caretakers visit only about every two weeks.

The officer describes the run-down house as unfit for anything to live in.

Some of the animals have been taken to the Niagara County SPCA for medical evaluation and traps are being set for other cats described as feral.

An investigation is ongoing.
