Jul 13, 2020

The Buffalo Catholic Diocese has announced plans for a wake and funeral for Bishop Emeritus Edward Kmiec.

Kmiec was the 13th bishop of the diocese. He died late Saturday at the age of 84.

Bishop Kmiec, a native of Trenton, NJ, served here from 2004 until his retirement in 2012. He chose to live out his retirement years at St. Joseph's Cathedral Rectory, where he died after a brief illness. St. Joseph's was established in 1847 by Buffalo's first bishop, John Timon.

Kmiec will lie in state in the main sanctuary of the cathedral at 50 Franklin St. in downtown Buffalo for public viewing on Thursday from noon-7 p.m. Social distancing and use of face masks will be required.

A diocesan mass will take place at 7 p.m., but will be open only to immediate family and diocesan representatives due to coronavirus concerns.

The funeral liturgy will be held Friday at noon and will again be closed to the public, but will be live-streamed on St. Joseph's YouTube channel beginning at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Bishops Crypt at the cathedral.
