To keep waterfront revitalization moving forward in the City of Niagara Falls, Congressman Brian Higgins is calling for removal of another section of the Robert Moses Parkway.
With the New York Power Authority set to begin removing the northern section of the expressway, from downtown to Findlay Drive, next summer, Higgins is calling on NYPA to also assume responsibility for the southern section. He says NYPA imposed the Robert Moses on the city without any input 60 years ago.
"The Robert Moses Parkway was never a parkway. It was an 18.4 mile elevated section of highway that blocked, literally and figuratively, the city of Niagara Falls from the greatest waterfront in the world," Higgins said.
One section, between Niagara Falls State Park and John Daly Boulevard, has already been replaced with an at-grade road which has restored waterfront access and spurred new development downtown. To keep the momentum going, Higgins says, the Robert Moses needs to removed between John Daly and the I-190.
"I see Niagara Falls in five years where Buffalo is today and that is a great sense of optimism not only for the people that live there but also for private sector investors to begin to really pour in money to expand the property tax base in Niagara Falls and taking advantage of its unique natural resources which is the falls and the Niagara River," Higgins said.
Some federal funding would be available. But Higgins says, NYPA generates 75% of its total revenues from the Niagara Power Project and it has the resources to finance the project.
