To help guide visitors to Buffalo's new popular waterfront destinations, a member of the state delegation is calling for new signage.
Signs are posted along area highways for First Niagara Center, Coca Cola Field, Ralph Wilson Stadium and other destinations. But State Senator Timothy Kennedy says there are no signs for directing travelers to Canalside or HarborCenter.
"Most importantly, for our out of town guests, we want to make sure that this is also part of a marketing strategy. We want folks to know that this is new areas of our community that they should go and explore. New areas that exist today that weren't here five-ten years ago and before that," Kennedy said.
The South Buffalo Democrat points out that Canalside is now attracting more than one million visitors a year. HarborCenter's general manager, Michael Gilbert says proper signage is important for holding successful events.
"We have so many out of town guests that are coming to Buffalo and discovering it for the first time. We had the NHL Draft here. Just a few weeks ago we had the NHL Combine. We have the World Junior Championships coming up in 18 months. And these are world-class events that we're bringing a lot of people to Buffalo and they need to know where to go," Gilbert said.
Kennedy is calling on the State Department of Transportation, the Thruway Authority and Erie Canal Harbor Corporation to work together on designing and installing highway signage for Canalside and HarborCenter.
