Lancaster school board supports female wrestler, terminates physician

The Lancaster School Board voted in a special session Saturday to remove the district's chief medical officer after he refused to allow a female student to wrestle with male students.

Wrestler Trista Blasz is a student at Lancaster Middle School

The school board terminated the contract of Dr. Michael Terranova. He had rejected 12-year-old Trista Blasz's application to participate on the junior varsity wrestling team. A handwritten notation next to his signature on the application read, "Girls don't play boys' sports in Lancaster schools."

Trista is a seventh grade student at Lancaster Middle School who is described as an accomplished wrestler.

The school board determined Terranova's findings were "inappropriate."

The board president says steps will be taken to make sure this does not happen again.
