A longtime Schiller Park landmark restaurant that moved to West Seneca five years ago is closing down.
Scharf's German Restaurant at 2683 Clinton Street has announced via its Facebook page that it will close Saturday.
"While we have every confidence in our product, we have sadly decided that Saturday, June 29th will be our last day. The Scharf Family and Staff would like to thank you for your many years of support and friendship. It is all of you that we will truly miss."
Owner Jerry Scharf had planned to close the restaurant in 2012, due to declining sales, but patronage increased at its South Crossman Street location and it remained open, moving in 2014.
That move cost the restaurant financially, forcing it into Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year. The restaurant had hoped that the protection from creditors would help "find profitability again or at least a chance to break even," but that did not happen.
Scharf's mother, Margarete, a German immigrant, opened Scharf's at Schiller Park in 1967.
