The New York State Council on the Arts awarded about $675,000 to several Western New York arts and culture organizations Thursday.
After handing out Thursday’s Grant awards to organizations like the Buffalo Philharmonic, Hallwalls and Torn Space Theater, the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) is now contributing close to $3 million to the Western New York region.
“I think Western New York's cultural sectors are a powerful economic driver,” said NYSCA Executive Director Mara Manus. “We know that it draws millions of tourists from around the world as well as creating a vibrant community.”
Manus said a study by Americans for the Arts shows the measurable impact.
“The region's nonprofit arts sector, generated 350 million dollars in the most recent year recorded and accounted for 10,000 jobs in the region,” she said.
Applications are available every year. Some awards range from two to five years long.
Manus said they are currently taking on more programs than they ever have before.
