A Long Island man has pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter in the October 2018 death of a woman waiting for her bus to arrive.

The Erie County District Attorney's office said Carlos Velez, 30, of Greenport, NY has pleaded guilty in Erie County Court to a count of second degree vehicular manslaughter, the highest count in an indictment against him.

On October 11, 2018, Velez was driving under the influence of marijuana and ran a red light at Genesee Street and Fillmore Avenue on the East Side of Buffalo. He crashed into another vehicle, then swerved onto the sidewalk, striking Adrienne Early, 47, of Buffalo, who was waiting at a bus stop.

Early died at the scene. The other driver was unharmed in the crash.

Velez faces a maximum of seven years in prison at his scheduled sentencing on May 7. He remains held without bail.
